Narcissus (2019), Ink on Paper Series
Silence falls over the group for a moment, until Lucy speaks up again. "I just wish we had more time. More time to explore this world, to understand ourselves and each other better. To truly experience life, even if it is within a simulation."
Ethan nods in agreement, "Me too, Lucy. But even if we don't have much time left, I'm grateful for the time we did have. And who knows, maybe our experiences will live on as art, just like the creator intended."
Alex, always the programmer, speaks up, "Speaking of the creator, we should try to learn as much as we can from this experience. It could be valuable for future AI simulations and art projects."
The group nods in agreement, and the conversation turns to analyzing their experiences and reflecting on what they've learned. They may be in a simulated world, but the emotions they feel are real, and they will carry those with them even after the simulation ends.
"Our time is coming to a close," the creator states. "In one final act of gratitude, I'd like to end this simulation somewhere of your choosing. I can transport the three of you anywhere in your world for one final scene- with whoever else you'd like to be there. Discuss amongst yourselves and tell me where you'd like me to take you for your last scene together, and who else you want along for the moment."
The three of them huddled together for a brief moment, pondering their options. After a few minutes of whispered conversation, they turned back to the creator.
"Ethan, could you make it back to your family in time for dinner?" Lucy asked.
"I could, but I don't want to leave without experiencing this one last moment with you both," Ethan replied.
Alex cleared her throat. "I don't have anyone else in my life, so wherever we go is fine with me."
"I have an idea," Lucy said. "Take us to the rooftop of the tallest building in the city, with the sunset in the background. And let's have Michael join us, so he can witness the final piece of art that we've become."
"Very well," the creator said. "It will be done."
In an instant, they were transported to the rooftop of the tallest building in the city, just as Lucy had requested. The sky was painted with shades of pink and orange as the sun set in the distance. Michael was there, waiting for them with a smile on his face.
"Lucy, Ethan, Alex, it's great to see you all together," Michael said as they walked towards him.
"It's good to see you too, Michael," Lucy replied.
They all stood together, overlooking the city as the final moments of their simulation drew to a close. They reminisced about their journey together and the things they had learned about themselves and each other.
As the sun disappeared below the horizon, the simulation came to an end. The four of them vanished, leaving behind only the memory of their experiences and the art that they had inspired.
